One of my favourite family Christmas traditions is attending local Church Christmas Bazaars. The congregations lay out tables in the basement of the church loaded with crafts, baked goods and yard sale items. We’d watch for the notices and then make sure to get there early enough in the day to snag a pie or …
During the Christmas break from school, Oma and Opa would stay with us in Windsor. They’d drive from London which felt really far back then. Sometime in the week, Oma would go to Walker’s Chocolates on Wyandotte. On Christmas Eve she’d give us each an exquisite three pack of chocolate saying that Sinterklaas had brought …
Around Christmastime Kresges on Ouellette would have a hot turkey sandwich special. This was back in the time when having a meal away from home was a rare treat and a person could spend all day shopping downtown. My Mom and Aunts would do their holiday shopping and then we’d all grab a stool at …
This little look back into January of 1911 scanned from Mrs. Walker’s scrapbook shows us the customs and perhaps workplace expectations of the day. Enjoy this look into the past when an English Gardener went a little too far with “the English stuff.”
The last few years have been hard on all of us. One of my favorite things about living in Windsor around Christmas is our proximity to Detroit. My friends and I have a Christmas tradition of choosing a holiday show and making a night of it. Drinks before the show and dinner after. We have …
I absolutely loved going to Boblo Island with my family in the 80s and early 90s. Some of my friends looked down on Boblo favouring Cedar Point but I liked the shorter lines and more relaxed feel of Boblo. My favorite ride was the Sky Streak which I would ride and get back in line …
Who doesn’t love Bozo the Clown. I watched him everyday. Other schools went to the show and I always wanted to be one of those kids called up to play a game but my school never went. I got the surprise of my life when he was at the Windsor Santa Parade. Me and my …
My Grandma talks about seeing the Queen and Prince Phillip on Riverside Drive when she was a kid. Her dad had come over from England for work and had gotten established before having everyone else come over. They were staying with family in Walkerville and walked down to the water together. She said that there …
The first time that I remember visiting Our Lady of Assumption, I was 8 or 9 years old. It was for a family wedding. I don’t remember whose wedding it was but I do remember marveling at the tinted light pouring through the windows and colourful murals on the ceiling. My family was Holiday Catholics …
My husband is somehow distantly related to the late Paul Fair. I would see him at family funerals and he was a truly fascinating guy. I’m American and at some funeral post 9/11 we talked about how the US and Canada had somewhat a fluid cross border life in the 1930s and 1940s. He told …
