This post is the ninteenth in a series in which we reached out to municipal candidates to ask their heritage platform. Responses will be posted in the order received.
Mike Burton was the ninteenth candidate to respond. He is running for the Ward 4 seat in the City of Windsor – the catchment area of which is east-central Windsor – an area which includes Walkerville.
Do you support the City of Windsor undertaking a feasibility study for the restoration of the Jackson Park Bandshell?
After a review of the posted notes, I understand that there is no land available in front of the bandshell so the restoration by itself may not be feasible. I would support a study to relocate the bandshell facing the park area and that would provide adequate land facing the bandshell to make it usable again. I recognize the bandshell does have great significance to the members of the community, and it would commemorate the past Emancipation Celebrations held in the park for many years.
What role should council play in strengthening heritage conservation overall?
I believe that Council has a central role in heritage conservation. Council should support the preservation of heritage sites and be the main catalyst to get senior government funding for heritage conservation efforts.
What is your favourite heritage landmark in Windsor?
I live in Ward 4 and hope to represent the Ward in the next Council. The stately homes in Walkerville, several of which are heritage homes, are some of my favourite heritage sites. As well Willistead Manor is one of the best and impressive sites this side of London.
