Heritage Platform – Chris Gibb – Candidate for Mayor – Town of Amherstburg

This post is the seventh in a series in which we reached out to municipal candidates to ask their heritage platform. Responses will be posted in the order received.

Chris Gibb was the seventh candidate to respond. He is running for Mayor in Town of Amherstburg

Please note: I shared with the candidates that Adam Coates and the Town of Amherstburg’s Heritage Committee have been nominated for a Carlos Ventin Award for Municipal Heritage Leadership from the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario. Chris Gibb is currently a Councillor in the Town of Amherstburg and is a member of the Heritage Committee.

I am a huge fan of heritage conservation and adaptive re-use in Amherstburg.
As a member of Amherstburg’s Heritage Committee for the last 4 years I have supported Amherstburg’s Heritage district plan being passed and implemented.
Have participated in many discussions on heritage permit applications that work with property owners in the heritage district to maintain the look and feel of our heritage neighbourhoods while allowing property owners to renovate and build new homes.
My position on Belle Vue has been, and remains, that the building should be restored to its former glory and be put to purposeful use. This may be by finding another private partner or even a sale to a group or individual that has the means and ability to restore the building.
While the town was unable to advance this goal during the current council term, I remain hopeful that another solution can be found.
