This post is the fifteenth in a series in which we reached out to municipal candidates to ask their heritage platform. Responses will be posted in the order received.
Chris Holt was the fifteenth candidate to respond. He is our first Heritage Platform from Windsor where he is running for Council in Ward 4 – the catchment area of which is east-central Windsor – an area which includes Walkerville.
Do you support the City of Windsor undertaking a feasibility study for the restoration and future use of the Jackson Park Bandshell? What role do you believe the municipality should play in determining the Bandshell’s future?
I would definitely support undertaking a feasibility study for the restoration and future use of the Jackson Park Bandshell. It has such tremendous cultural value to our community that not doing so is a disservice. As to what role I see the city playing in its future, I would need to rely on local institutions to take to lead on that one, while retaining ownership of the bandshell.
What role should council play in strengthening heritage conservation overall? How should Windsor balance growth, development, and the protection of historic places?
I am sitting here responding to your survey just hours before I head out the door to Willistead Manor for the discussion on the Walkerville Heritage Conservation District. As a resident of Walkerville, and owner of a 105 year old home, I understand the value architectural heritage plays in the success of our community as well as the additional costs that come with the proper maintenance of heritage properties. I have sat on the Heritage committee in the past and floated the idea of tax breaks for owners of heritage properties to help offset the higher maintenance costs and still stand by that idea. Heritage preservation is economic development.
What is your favourite heritage landmark in Windsor? Why does it matter to you?
The St. Peter’s Maronite Church on Tecumseh Rd W has got to be one of the most stunning buildings in the city. I go out of my way to see it whenever I can. I do not belong to the parish and have no connection to the community, but truly appreciate the effort they’ve gone through to preserve that marvelous building. I could – and have – got lost in the details hidden in every corner.
