This post is the thirteenth in a series in which we reached out to municipal candidates to ask their heritage platform. Responses will be posted in the order received.
Fred Groves was the thirteenth candidate to respond. He is running for Council to represent Ward 1 – the catchment area of which is Essex Centre.
Thank You for asking these very important questions.
1) In response to your first questions regarding demolition by neglect – I believe there is a difference between neglect and abandonment and that each municipality including the Town of Essex has different by-laws including property standaard by-laws. It is very important to work closely with the owner who may or may not be aware of the historical significance of the home/building.
2) I believe that in the Town of Essex, we already have a very strong heritage conservation effort coming forth. However, if there is one thing I would recommend, that would be to utilize the Tourism Windsor-Essex Pelee Island to market the significance of our historical landmarks. Also, locally, and in conjunction with our local school boards, make a better effort in teaching our youth about heritage properties in their own neighbourhoods and the significant role their stories played in shaping their community.
3) My favourite heritage landmark in Essex? That is a tough one to answer so I will give you my top two. 1) John R. Park Homestead 2) Train Station in Essex
