Heritage Platform – Tim Wilkinson – Incumbant for Leamington Town Council

This post is the twenty-eigth in a series in which we reached out to municipal candidates to ask their heritage platform. Responses will be posted in the order received.

Tim Wilkinson was the twenty-eigth candidate to respond. He is running for as an incumbant for a council seat in the Municipality of Leamington

How will you help protect the many heritage‑significant buildings in Leamington that will be cleared from the list of properties of heritage interest and could be demolished without notice after 2027?

Truthfully, I wasn’t aware of any changes coming to the list of cultural or heritage interest properties. I’d need to speak more in depth with the Municipalities planning department to see what role the public and Municipal Council are involved. I’d also like to reach out to our local member of Provincial Govt. (Trevor Jones) to further clarify how municipalities will be affected.

What role should council play in strengthening heritage conservation overall?

The Council of the Municipality should continue to review and protect it’s list of Cultural and Heritage properties. In some cases, Council’s should consider providing restoration and repairs to some significant properties and buildings. Council should continue to look for partnerships with the private sector and other institutions related to post secondary education, healthcare and social Partners, and tourists or newcomers to our area. A good example of this happened during my first term with the Gregory Buildings in Leamington on Mill St. which is now the successful home to Cured Brewery in Leamington.

What is your favourite heritage building in Leamington? Why is it meaningful to you?

The Federal Building in Leamington on Talbot St. W is what I believe, Leamington’s most iconic heritage building. We’re so fortunate that this building has an incredible tenant and steward in the Leamington Arts Center. This municipal partnership makes sense and works to keep our significant historical building functioning properly with regular care, maintenance and repairs. I’m really proud of the role I’ve played over the years to help the LAC successfully operate and care for this beautiful Leamington treasure in the heart of our Uptown.
