Family Day

In my day, family day was Sunday. The whole family would meet for mass and then we’d go to a family member’s house for lunch. At first there weren’t that many of us but by the time we stopped meeting in the 1970s, we had grown out of everyone’s homes. It was always a different house to be fair. On real special days, we would have a picnic lunch or take a bus downtown. This was when you would dress up for church. Mother would bring blankets and lay them out but we’d roll in the grass while she’d yell at us for ruining our Sunday clothes. When Mother spoke we listened but there was always a smile in her voice. She was a big believer in kids being kids.
