This post is the third in a series in which we reached out to municipal candidates to ask their heritage platform. Responses will be posted in the order received.
The third to respond was Molly Allaire, Candidate for Amherstburg Town Council. The responses are in the candidate’s own words only slightly edited in a way that doesn’t in any way change what they said.
It is so funny how you are asking about heritage platform. I was focusing much of my platform on green space. I have 3 kids and am tired of the towns land going to building more houses when the kids in those houses have currently 1 park in our entire town to play on. However, after talking to one of my residents she led me to an amazing place. The Marsh Collection Society. Now I am reading all about our town’s history in these two amazing books that another one of my residents had. The history of this town is so immense and it’s fun to see it reflected in our town today. I hope to keep many of the town’s historic traditions alive. Things like Duffy’s marina. I know there is no salvation for that to be a working marina like back in the day, but why can we not reflect some of the historical aspects into a new form of Amherstburg shoreline. Maybe instead of boats hooked up to the dock we have a canoe/kayak launch. Maybe a food truck named Duffy’s serving the motel tavern food. I think it is important to know and reflect our history in our new modern town. This is what makes our town unique to begin with.
You ask me my favorite memory and that is easy! Coming up this Sept 4 will be 6-year anniversary for me and my husband! We got married at Fort Malden, had our meal at Lord Amherst, and dessert was Waterfront Ice cream. It truly was the perfect day. Everything was local, even our photographer was our neighbour down the street. My husband and I had our first date at Lord Amherst and even where we got engaged! Amherstburg has been my home my whole life. I just want to make it a great home for my kids and my neighbours as well.
